Natural Supplement Antioxidant Research Study

The UPBEAT Research Study is a randomized clinical trial looking at the effects of an herbal supplement derived from Pine Bark Extract.  Preliminary studies have shown that Pine Bark Extracts may help reduce blood pressure levels, as well as other heart disease risk factors.  The phyto-chemicals found in pine bark extracts are powerful antioxidants.  They are also are found in lower amounts in many common foods including apples, pears, grapes, and wine.  Pine bark extracts are thought to be generally safe for human consumption and are popularly sold in health food stores.

Benefits of Participating
Research study participants who complete clinical screening:
Receive blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screening results. 

Research study participants who are eligible for, attend orientation, and join the full study receive the following:
1) After 2nd Baseline Study Visit: $25 in compensation
2) After6-week Study Visit:  $30 in compensation
3) After Final Study Visit:  $45 in compensation
4) Results of important laboratory tests at no charge

What Does the Study Involve?
8 trips to Stanford total (parking is free):
   *  One trip to Stanford University for screening visit for 25-35 minutes
   *  One trip to Stanford University for orientation visit for 90 minutes
   *  5 trips to Stanford University for clinic visits 20-30 minutes each
   *  One trip to Stanford University for collecting study pills for 5-10 minutes
Completing questionnaires: demographics form (2 minutes), food records (90-180 minutes total), adverse symptoms form (5 minutes)
Taking a natural antioxidant supplement or placebo (sugar pill) for 12 weeks

Who Can Participate?
You Are Eligible for UPBEAT Study Screening if You Answer True to the Following Statements

1) You are age 18 or older.
2) Your weight has been stable for the last 2 months (within 5 lb gain, 5 lb lost) and you are willing to delay new weight loss programs while in the study.
3) Your systolic blood pressure has been greater than 123.  Blood pressure includes 2 numbers, systolic is the larger of the two.  If you are not sure about this question, you may still be eligible.
4) Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 24 and 35.

5) You do not take blood pressure medications or diabetes medications.
6) You are willing to discontinue taking other supplements the supplements for 4 weeks before the and during the 12 weeks of the study.  You can still take a vitamins and minerals.
7) You are available to participate in this study for the next 4 months.
This will include 8 trips to Stanford total (parking is free):

If you answered TRUE to all the questions above, you are may be eligible to attend a clinical screening visit for the study.   

Screening to Join the UPBEAT Study Involves 2 Steps

1.  Complete a Screening Form 
Click here to complete an online study screening form over a secure server.  The screening form will take less than 10 minutes. Online screening is the faster most convenient way to screen for the study.  scAlternatively, you may complete the screening over the phone by calling study staff at (650) 725-3080.

2.  Sign a Consent Form and Complete an In-Person Clinical Visit 
After you complete the online screening questions and are elgible, we will mail you a consent form to attend a clinical visit. 

After you have returned the consent form, we will schedule a clinical screening visit to determine your final eligibility.  The clinical screening visit will be conducted at the General Clinical Research Center.

Study staff will check your fasting blood glucose and cholesterol levels to determine if you meet the criteria to join the full study.  Regardless of your final eligibility, you will receive valuable screening information about your cholesterol and glucose levels.  These are important indicators for heart disease and diabetes.
